INTRODUCTION The Malaysian government has supported its craftspeople significantly since 1974 with the establishment of  Kraftangan, a government organization under the auspices of the ministry of culture that is designed to promote Malaysian handicrafts and culture. This outstanding program serves as a role model for the arts and textile industries of other countries. The common goal is simply to make Malaysia a Batik capital. According to Matrade, textiles are ranked 9th  and accounting for 2. 3 per cent share of Malaysia’s exports of total manufactured goods. In 2011, exports of textiles and apparel & clothings totaled RM10. 81 billion from RM9. 32 billion for the same period last year, an increase of 15. 9 per cent. Of this, exports of textiles was valued at RM6. 72 billion and accounted for 62. per cent share, while apparels and clothing accounted for 37. 8 per cent share, valued at RM4. 08 billion. Higher exports were due to increasing exports of yarns and apparels. The USA, Japan, T urkey, Indonesia and China were Malaysia’s top 5 export destinations for Malaysia’s textiles and apparel & clothing. USA remained the leading export market contributing to 18. 6 per cent share of the total exports of the industry. Export was valued at RM2. 01 billion, an increase of 13. 6 per cent. 1. 1 The Unique Batik MalaysiaDeveloping batik as handcrafted textile – hand printed and hand drawn, has made us all acutely aware of the importance of three essential elements in producing a new product. They are, namely, Design, Colour and Technique. We need to pay attention to all of the three above elements giving emphasis to Design which requires the most and urgent attention. Secondly, Malaysians love bright colours and batik in bright colours has become a manifestation of that expression. However, we need to think of the market and the consumers we are targeting. Therefore, we need to study how they perceive colours and their receptivity to our  selection of c olours. And thirdly, the need to take  an aggressive approach in R&D and to engage in experimenting  new technologies that can expedite and enhance batik production process as well as to solve problems related to attaining quality production. Learning from the experiences of other countries such as Japan and Korea, and adapting their practices to meet our needs would indeed be a real asset. Another aspect of R&D, relates to acquiring  knowledge about the characteristics of fabrics in order to appraise their appropriateness for making batik. What makes Batik  Malaysia unique is that we have been able to develop it through innovation by observing and learning from the tradition of batik–making of other countries, and successfully creating our own indigenous batik–style. 1. 2 Trends in Fashion The world of fashion has created an immense consciousness with the designers and batik – makers who recognise the need to constantly innovate and produce new designs, introduce   new range of colours as well as to experiment with new production techniques to meet with the fast changing consumer taste and fashion trends. As a result, batik crafted from a variety of materials such as silk, cotton and linen of varying texture   have emerged in the market place. 1. 3 Batik as an Art form Malaysian artists have made an inroad with their innovative adaptation of the batik technique on canvas. Henceforth, a new genre of batik as an art form was born. Batik paintings depicting images of Malaysian flora, fauna, forest, food and fiesta themes are providing a glimpse into the rich diversity of natural and cultural heritage of Malaysia through Batik Art. 1. 4 The Design ChallengeA good design should create a pleasant virtual experience: the customer should perceive the product as aesthetically pleasing. In this respect, batik designers should develop batik design to  respond to the particular needs of the consumers thereby promoting  the concept of sp ecial design for specific usage, such as  batik  for school wear, batik for uniform, batik for daily wear, batik for formal day and evening attire and batik for special occasions. Each  particular design with special motif, pattern, colour and fabric  created would therefore give batik that exclusive ook and this  would impact on batik not only as  a versatile textile for clothing but also in popularizing it to a wider market. Malaysia’s natural environment offers limitless source of inspiration from which new ideas, patterns, motifs and colours could be derived. At the same time, the uniqueness of each community in Malaysia, the people and their living traditions and cultural heritage are  yet another  source  for design input. 2. US MARKET 2. 1CULTURE OF THE PEOPLE the  culture of the United States  is primarily a  Western culture, but is also influenced by  Native American,  Asian,  Polynesian,  African, and  Latin American  cultures.Ame rican culture started its formation over 10,000 years ago with the migration of  Paleo-Indians  from  Asia  into the region that is today the  continental United States. It has its own unique social and cultural characteristics such as  dialect,  music,  arts,  etc. The United States of America is an ethnically and racially  diverse  country as a result of large-scale immigration from many different countries throughout its history. Due to the extent of American culture, there are many integrated but unique social  subcultures  within the United States. The cultural affiliations an individual in the United States may have commonly depend on  social class,  political orientation  and a multitude of demographic characteristics such as religious background, occupation and ethnic group membership. 2. 2 POLITIC & ECONOMIC Political US REGULATORY COMPLIANCE Companies that are involved in the production and distribution of medical devices that are intended fo r marketing in the U. S. are required to register their facility with the FDA on form FDA 2891. There is no fee for registering your facility. As of 11 February 2002, foreign companies must also provide the FDA with the contact information for their U. S. Agent and this information can be provided on this form as well. This form must be completed by the official correspondent designated on the form and submitted 30 days prior to exporting to the U. S. All registration information must be verified annually and updated if changes have occurred. If the company is registering for the first time, the registration form FDA 2891 must be submitted to the FDA along with the Device Listing form FDA 2892.This form is used to identify to the FDA the devices that the company has in commercial distribution by generic category. There is also no fee for submitting this form. U. S. Fiscal Policy Turning first to U. S. fiscal policy, the slow pace so far of economic recovery and weak job creation†”despite the wide margin of excess capacity—argues for maintaining supportive monetary and fiscal policies in the very near term. Indeed, expansionary fiscal policy already played a critical role in averting a deeper U. S. recession.According to IMF analysis, fiscal measures contributed about 2 percentage points to GDP growth in 2009, and another one percentage point last year. At the same time, federal debt held by the public has risen from about 36 percent of GDP in 2007 to about 62 percent of GDP in 2010, while prospective debt dynamics have worsened significantly. In the absence of corrective measures, and taking into account underlying fiscal pressures that predated the crisis, debt could reach about 95 percent of GDP by the end of this decade—a level last reached immediately following World War II.Without policy adjustments, subsequently the debt simply would keep rising. From this perspective, the need for urgent action to secure medium-term fiscal sustainabil ity appears to be self-evident. Political Ideologies in the United States Ideologies in US politics vary greatly. However, for the majority of American citizens, most political ideologies are derived from classical liberalism. Ideas such as individual liberty and limited government, for example, are popular with most Americans.Unlike many other countries, there are only two major political parties in America and their core beliefs are very similar due to the moderation that the two party system in US politics encourages. The Democratic Party, who tend to represent liberal ideals, lean slightly to the political left and the Republican, who generally favour conservative ideals, lean slightly to the political right. The two dominant ideologies that exist in American politics today are conservatism and liberalism. Economic in US The United States’ economic freedom scores of 76. 3 drops it to 10th place in the 2012 Index. Its score is 1. 5 points lower than last year, reflecting de teriorating scores for government spending, freedom from corruption, and investment freedom. The U. S. is ranked 2nd out of three countries in the North America region, and its overall score remains well above the world and regional averages. The U. S. economy faces enormous challenges. Although the foundations of economic freedom remain strong, recent government interventions have eroded limits on government, and public spending by all levels of government now exceeds one-third of total domestic output. The regulatory burden on business continues to increase rapidly, and heightened uncertainty further increases regulations’ negative impact. Restoring the U. S. economy to the status of a â€Å"free† economy will require significant policy changes to reduce the size of government, overhaul the tax system, and transform costly entitlement programs. By boosting growth in the private sector, such freedom-enhancing policies are the best hope for bringing down high unemployme nt rates and reducing public debt to manageable levels. The trade weighted average tariff rate is 1. percent, with non-tariff barriers such as â€Å"buy American† procurement rules adding to the cost of trade. Investment freedom is hampered by ongoing protectionist restrictions. The impact of the recently passed financial reform bills has yet to be measured, as detailed regulations are gradually emerging. The indicators to gauge the economic performance in US Population: 310. 0 million GDP (PPP): $14. 7 trillion,2. 8% growth 0. 9% 5-year compound annual growth,$47,284 per capita Unemployment: 9. 6% Inflation (CPI): 1. 6% FDI Inflow: $228. 2 billion (Based on data compiled as of September 2011) . 3 TARGET MARKET 3. It is accepted that in many cases, products are liable to customs duties when imported into a market and that  imported products ought to be accompanied by the correct documentation. In some cases, however, customs duties may be unreasonably high or customs clearance may take an unreasonably long time. Batik Garment trade barriers may take the form of, for example: †¢ Customs duties †¢ Customs procedures †¢ Technical regulations, standards, etc. for example for the purpose of consumer protection, health protection, protection of the environment, etc †¢ Veterinary and phytosanitary measures – barriers based on health and safety regulations †¢ R estrictions on access to primary products –  for example in the form of export batik that drive up prices artificially or special export prices that are higher than the price of the same primary products for use in national processing industries †¢ Insufficient protection of intellectual property rights –  both with respect to the scope of protection and with respect to the possibilities of legal protection. This includes, for instance, protection of patents, copyrights, trademarks and geographical indications of origin †¢ Barriers to trade in services –  for example in the form of discriminatory conditions †¢ Restrictions on access to investment –  for example through national participation requirements or restrictions on access to repatriation of profits †¢ Unfair application of state aid and other forms of subsidies Due to globalization, trade restrictions have become increasingly significant. At the same time, traditional tra de obstacles such as tariffs and import restrictions have been reduced, as a result of international trade liberalization. In the period following the Second World War, average tariffs for industrial goods have been reduced from approx. 40 percent to less than 5 percent. As a consequence, other trade restrictions have become of relatively greater significance. These other trade restrictions are often based on regulations and principles relating to qualitative matters, for example: product quality requirements and product packaging requirements ostensibly for  the purpose of consumer protection; education and qualification requirements  for providers of services; or rules relating to patent and trademark protection. This has contributed to making it more difficult for companies to gain an overview of rules and changes to rules,  making the handling of trade barriers  more complicated,  as barriers touch on matters that are subject to internal national legislation or regulatio n in the export markets. Understanding A Rose for Emily - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 879 Downloads: 9 Date added: 2019/04/15 Category Literature Essay Level High school Tags: A Rose For Emily Essay Did you like this example? A Rose for Emily is a short story by William Faulkner. Faulkner uses a narrator to tell the story nonchronologically. Faulkner created a southern city, in his story, much like the one he personally lived in when he grew to be five. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Understanding A Rose for Emily" essay for you Create order In A Rose for Emily Emilys family are southern aristocrats. Emilys father isolates her. The town considers Emily nothing more than a traditional duty even though they believe Emily is stuck up. After Emilys father dies, Emily is in a state of denial, She told them that her father was not dead. (Faulkner 1000). Then a man named Homer Barron strolls into town with laborers. Emily takes a liking to him despite the possibility of Homer being a gay bachelor. The town disapproves of this possible union. Conveniently Homer is said to leave town around the same time Emily buys arsenic. Emily refuses to explain the use of the arsenic that she wishes to purchase. The town folk of Jefferson, Mississippi go to Emilys home after she is buried. The towns people explore Emilys home to find a skeleton in a bed. It is implied that he skeleton belongs to Homer Barron. Next to the skeleton is a pillow with a gray hair on top. Is Emily mentally ill or has being secluded by her father and alienated by t he town resulted in perverse actions? Emilys father issues seem to be the beginning of what will result in perverse actions. It is a strong possibility that a supportive home life could have prevented the killing of an innocent man. Emilys father not only secluded Emily from a romantic suitor but her family as well. Emilys great aunt went insane, the kin from Alabama had a falling out with the Griersons over land. The kin from Alabama did not even bother showing up to Mr. Griersons funeral. We remembered all the young men her father had driven away, and we knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had robbed her, as people will. (Faulkner 1000). Emily was in a state of denial for three days after her father died. Emily refused to let the body go and the town was going to have to result to law and force, although reluctant, Emily buried her father quickly. Emilys father left her with the house but no money. Emily had no means to support herself. When her father died, it got about that the house was all that was left to her; and in a way, people were glad. (Faulkner 1000). During this time period it was custom for a woman to find a husband. Young women aspire to find love, get married and, start a family. Emilys father ran away potential male suitors, keeping Emily secluded. Thus, Emily grew to be a woman above average age for marriage, Emily was labeled as a spinster. Homer himself had remarked-he liked men in the Elks Club-that he was not a marrying man. (Faulkner 1001). It appears as if Emily has set herself up for failure by falling for a man that not only did not wish to marry, but a man who was not interested in the opposite sex. However, not all fingers should be pointed at Emily, as Emily was refused the chance to be courted. When she got to be thirty and was still single. (Faulkner 1000). However, it is easy for a woman like Emily, who has never been around men romantically, to fall for a man who is full of charisma. Whenever you heard a lot of laughing anywhere about the square, Homer Barron would be in the center of the group. (Faulkner 1000). The towns people began to see Homer and Emily together on Sundays. The older towns folk were not happy with this union because they felt Emily should not forget her status. The towns folk even began to say that their union was a disgrace to the town and was a bad example. The towns people talked the minister into talking to Miss Emily, however, he would not disclose information, nor would he return to Emilys home. The town originally called her cousins from Alabama in hopes to separate Emily and Homers union, but ended up hating the cousins, claiming that they were more Grierson than Miss Emily had ever been. (Faulkner 1002). The town was upset that there was not a public break-up. Later Emily was witnessed buying mens items which led the town to believe that they did get married. Emily bought arsenic about the same time Homer Barron seemingly left town. When Emily was asked what the poison was for, she would not answer. Emilys house began to smell so bad that a judge received multiple complaints. Because the judge refused to make a move, the town took it upon themselves and sprinkled lime around her house. Finally, after Emilys burial, the entire town went to Emilys home and began to snoop around. In a closed off room the towns people found a skeleton that was posed in an embracing position. The pillow next to Homers skeleton was an indentation and for further evidence, a grey hair lays upon the pillow. All in all, if Emily was not alienated from the town and her father, these perverse actions may not have occurred.

Movie Analysis The American Dream - 860 Words

Movies and the cinematic world can be used as a very powerful tool. Whether it is in protest, or trying to get a message through to the audience, movie producers and directors are very highly skilled in the ways of doing so. We see many examples of how different social problems can be reflected in films. In two films that have been discussed and seen in class, Kingsman and Mad Max, the theories of Karl Marx and the desire to fulfill the â€Å"American Dream† are prominent throughout both of the films. Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman is a perfect representation of the quest for the â€Å"American Dream†. The â€Å"American Dream†, in this context, is the opportunity for prosperity and success. When Eggsy’s journey throughout the film is analyzed, one can see how he represents the billions of people around the planet that will not throw away their one shot to have a better life or to find success in their endeavors. He had a poor upbringing and was on a bad path, but learning from those experiences helped him achieve his goal of becoming a Kingsman. The film, however, does cater to Hollywood’s white citizenry. Mainly all of the characters in the film are white, except for the villain and his henchwoman. Even the â€Å"non-privileged† characters were white. Another topic that can be analyzed is the desire for power and wealth, and how money corrupts people. Karl Marx wrote many essays and works based around his theories on wealth. In Kingsman, we can see a reflection of some of Marx’s theories andShow MoreRelatedAnalysis Of The Movie The American Dream 754 Words   |  4 Pages Nyreel Powell Ms. Jones American Literature 1 June 2015 The American dream in A Raisin in the Sun Have you ever had a dream and it didn’t come how you wanted it to be? I Have a Name free essay sample

†Hello, I’m Matthew’s English teacher† I had seen it coming, but my heart dropped into my stomach nonetheless as my teammates continued on to pass me, shuffling along as the fatigue of the game set into their wearied bones. My grandmother’s angry bewilderment cut through the air in an interogating bark, accompanied by the shrill, biting wind. †Excuse me?† I didn’t speak. The cold, slick metal of the ticket desk beneath my fingers and the frigid night air sent me into an uncontrollable shiver, and I started to back away. She repeated my name once again and it rung mockingly clear, stripping me of the act I had kept up for so long. †I’m Matthew’s teacher, it’s nice to meet you† I didn’t speak.I stumbled backward, stammering a see you tomorrow to my teacher before turning to begin the long walk to the car, my grandmother catching up quickly to confront me. We will write a custom essay sample on I Have a Name or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page †So you’re going by Matthew now, that’s it† I didn’t speak, I was too horrified.I just stared ahead into the velvety black sky, empty except for a sparse smattering of stars.I savored the moment, tuning her out as best I could, knowing that soon I would be trapped with her for the duration of the car ride home. †So what, you’re a boy now?† I didn’t speak. I only thought to myself, yes, I do have a name.My name is Matthew.Dread weighed me down as we trekked the rest of the way to the car in icy silence. She was undoubtedly preparing her next blow, but I was too busy being devastated to give it much thought. †Sara, you have a name, goddamn it† Any remaining hope for graciousness and warmth lay shattered on the concrete behind me, and it became painfully obvious that despite all my efforts to stay hidden I had been exposed, and I was going to have to deal with it whether I was ready to or not. †How could you do this to me?† That was her final comment on the subject, which, although ruthless in its passive aggression, left me more indignant than upset. Who did I have to blame?Who was there to be angry with?No one, not really. My life wasn’t splintered beyond repair.I wasn’t disowned, I wasn’t forced to live out on the streets. Most importantly, I no longer had to hide who I was in fear of being discovered.I wasn’t exactly accepted as the young man I am, however, I’ve learned that the most important part about being true to yourself is refusing to appease other people’s expectations of who you should become.I will not grow up to become a lady, I will become a man, as well as hundreds of other things.Being transgender isn’t the most important thing about me, but it is the biggest obstacle I’ve encountered as a young person trying to figure out who he’s going to be. It’s something that won’t be overcome without tears and heartache, but it’s something that will be overcome eventually, and I tackle it each and every day.

The Political Framework Of Islam Essays - Islam, Caliphate

The Political Framework Of Islam The Political Framework Of Islam The political system of Islam is based on the three principles of towhid (Oneness with Allah), risala ( Prophethood), and khilifa ( Caliphate). Towhid means that one Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer, and Master of the universe and of all that exists in it- organic or inorganic. He alone has the right to command or forbid, and worship and obedience are due to him alone. The Islamics believe that it is not for them to decide the aim or purpose of our existence or to set the limits of our worldly authority; nor does anyone else have the rights to make these decisions for them. These rights rest only with Allah. This principle of the Oneness with Allah makes meaningless the concept of the legal and political sovereignty of human beings. No individual, family, class or race can set themselves above Allah. Allah alone is the ruler and his commandments constitute the law of Islam. Risala is the medium in which Islamics receive the law of Allah. They have received two things from this source: the Qur'an ( the book in which Allah has expounded his law), and the authoritative interpretation and exemplification of that book by the prophet Muhammad ( blessings of Allah and peace be upon him), through word and dead, in his capacity as the representative of Allah. The Qur'an laid down the broad principles on which human life should be based and the Prophet of Allah, in accordance with these principles, established a model system of Islamic life. The combination of these two elements is called the shari'a (law). Khilifa means "representation" Man, according to Islam, is the representative of Allah on earth. Khilifa also means that no individual or dynasty or class can be the law: the authority of Khilfa is bestowed on the whole of any community which is ready to fulfil the conditions of representation after subscribing to the principles of Towhid and risala. Such a society carries the responsibility of the Khilafa as a whole and each one of its individuals shares in it. This is the point where democracy begins in Islam. Every individual in an Islamic society enjoys the rights and powers of the caliphate of Allah and in this respect all individuals are equal. No-one may deprive anyone else of his rights and powers. The agency for running the affairs of the state will be formed by agreement with these individuals, and the authority of the state will only be an extension of the powers of the individuals delegated to do it. Their opinion will be decisive in the formation of the government, which will be run with their advice and in accordance with their wishes. Whoever gains their confidence will undertake the duties and obligations of the caliphate on their behalf; and when he loses this confidence he will have to step down. In this respect, the political system of Islam is as perfect a dorm of democracy as there can be. What distinguishes Islamic democracy from Western democracy, therefor, is that the latter is based on the concept of popular sovereignty, while the former rests on the principle of popular khilafa. In Western democracy, the people are sovereign; in Islam sovereignty is vested in Allah and the people are his caliphs or representatives. In the former the people make their own; in the latter they have to follow and the laws given by Allah through his Prophet. In one the government undertakes to fulfil the will of the people; in the other the government and the people have to fulfil the will of Allah. The Holy Qur'an clearly states that the aim and purpose of this state is the establishment, maintenance, and development of those virtues which the Creator wishes human life to be enriched by and the prevention and eradication of those evils in human life which he finds abhorrent. The Islamic state is intended neither solely as an instrument of political administration nor for the fulfillment of the collective will of any particular set of people; rather, Islam places a high ideal before the state for the achievement of which it must use all the means at its disposal. This ideal is that the qualities of purity, beauty, goodness, virtue, success and prosperity, which Allah wants to flourish in the life of his people, should be engendered and developed and that all kinds of exploitations, injustice and disorder which, in the sight of Allah, are ruinous for the world and detrimental to the life of his creatures, should be suppressed and
